There are a few hunting seasons open that residents of Iowa can participate in at the moment.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Jeremy King says that youth and disabled deer hunting seasons began September 21st, and last until October 6th. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that it’s important for youth hunters to get their license, even if they don’t end up filling their tag.

“And if you think that maybe you want to get out, or you have a kid and you know of a young kid who wants to get out, they should get that license bought. Because that youth tag will be good all of deer season. So every single deer season, if they don’t fill it during that youth season, it’ll carry over to the other seasons. They just have to use a weapon that is in season that they’re going to be hunting.”

King mentions that there are some small game seasons currently open, as squirrels and rabbits can be harvested. The season for cottontail rabbits lasts until February 28, 2025, while squirrel season for both fox and gray squirrels lasts until January 31, 2025. Some other less common small game seasons include pigeon season, which is open year round, and crow season which is open from October 15th to November 30th, and January 14, 2025 to March 31, 2025. King adds that before you go hunting, it is always a smart idea to check if the area you’re hunting in has its own regulations as well as those that the state has.
