Several Greene County 4-H’ers recently did well at one of the final county fairs for the year.

Greene County ISU Extension 4-H and Youth Coordinator Samantha Hardaway says the popular Clay County Fair was held and five 4-H’ers did well. According to Hardaway, Avril Shahan had the overall Supreme Ewe for county and district, Supreme District Ewe, Grand Champion Black Faced Ewe and Champion Medium Weight Ewe. Stella Lautner was the Champion Lightweight and Champion Polled Hereford Heifer. Other 4-H’ers that also received accolades were Becca Shahan, Owen Frederick and Bruce Stephensen.

Hardaway talks about what draws lots of Greene County 4-H’ers to want to compete at county fairs that are after the Iowa State Fair in August.

“Well I think it’s just another opportunity for them to show and get their animal into the ring. That’s what a lot of kids live and breathe is the show world. They aren’t headed athletic practice after school. They’re headed to go work their animal. It’s a 24 hour a day job with them and it’s just getting them into the show ring again.”

Hardaway is proud of the work the 4-H’ers did and the results they received at the Clay County Fair. A full list of the awards and recognitions from Greene County can be found below.
