An investigation from the January 4th Perry school shooting is ongoing and it is unclear if that report will be made public.
It has been reported that the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has released its report to the Dallas County Attorney’s Office with the details of the tragic events that left three people dead, including the shooter, a sixth grader, and Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger. Dallas County Attorney Jeannine Ritchie released a statement if the report is going to be made public:
“The report of the DCI will not be a public document and in my opinion, it is exempted from Ch 22 of the Iowa Code for open records. It is an investigative report by law enforcement.”
Perry School District Superintendent Clark Wicks, and on behalf of the school board, shared this statement in response to the situation.
“Well first, the January 4th incident is still under investigation. Number two, the decision on whether to make the report public is solely up to the county attorney’s office. The Perry Community School (District) is not involved with that decision. The Perry Community School District does not have the report. I trust that the county attorney will complete their investigation and the public will be informed with appropriate information at an appropriate time.”
Wicks understands the reasons why people want the report publicly released, but he kindly asks residents to give the county attorney’s office time to thoroughly review the facts of the investigation before proceeding with any further comment on the matter.
