It’s Greene County and Perry in high school football tonight at Dewey Field in Perry in what is known as the “Cowbell game.” The Rotary Clubs from Jefferson and Perry donated a cowbell in 1928 to the winning team and it stays with that team until being brought to the football field the following season. The 94th meeting with the Cowbell at stake can be heard on KG98 from the Greene County point of view and on 1310 KDLS and 99.7 FM for the Blue Jays point of view. The contest will also be streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
The Rams lead the “Cowbell Series” 62-29-2, but the teams have actually played more than 100 times going back to 1898 when the Perry YMCA team defeated the Jefferson High School team. For the second year in a row, the Blue Jays come into the game with a better record than the Rams, 1-0 to 0-1. Perry won at Des Moines Hoover last week by a 35-21 score while the Rams lost at home to Carroll High, 34-21. Starting with the 2018 season, Perry has just one victory over a team not named Des Moines Hoover. The Rams have won the last five games in the series, but have lost the last five games they’ve played, dating back to the 2023 season.
