This is the second part of a multi-part series about the high school football rivalry between Greene County and Perry, simply known at “The Cowbell Game.”

The football series between teams from Jefferson and Perry began in 1898 when the Perry YMCA defeated the Jefferson High School team. Since 1928 when the Rotary clubs of the two communities donated a cowbell, that prize stays with the winning team until the game the following year.

The series has had only minor interruptions in the last 126 years. There have been brief interruptions for war, flu epidemics, covid 19, and for a two year period in the early 1990’s they simply did not play. Other than that, the teams have played each other, and when they meet this Friday at Dewey Field in Perry at 7 p.m., it will be for the 94th time with the Cowbell at stake. Greene County has a lead of 62-29-2 in the series with five victories in a row.

Friday’s game can be heard on KGRA 98.9 FM, 1310 AM KDLS and 99.7 FM. The game will also be streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
