Greene County lost its high school football season opener on Friday night at Linduska Field in Jefferson to the Carroll High Tigers, 34-21. The non-district contest was held on Heroes Night as Military veterans, Firefighters, Law Enforcement, and First Responders were honored. Carroll received the opening kickoff and drove 64 yards on seven plays for an early touchdown. Moments later Ty Mulbauer intercepted a pass and went 25 yards to put the Tigers up 14-0 midway through quarter number one. The Rams got on the board later in the opening stanza on an 82 yard pass play from senior Crew Conner to junior Brock Stream, and Camden Strennen ran for the conversion points to make it 14-8. A 47 yard TD run for Nicholas Stream tied it at 14-14, but the extra point kick hit the bottom of the crossbar.
Knotted at 14-14 at halftime, Carroll scored first in the third quarter to lead 21-14 before Conner hit senior Camden Jacobs at the back of the end zone for a four yard TD pass. Tegan Chisholm kicked the extra point in his first varsity football game to tie it at 21-21.
The last 13 points were scored by the Tigers as the Class 3A program showed its depth against a 2A Rams team with just 35 players combined for the four grades.
Brock Stream had 94 receiving yards, the one TD reception, plus a fumble recovery and a pass interception as both teams had two turnovers. Penalties were light with the Rams at two for 20 yards and the Tigers five for 45 yards.
