The AC/GC Chargers were on the road Friday night for the football season opener, and came away with a demanding victory.

The Chargers were in Ogden facing the Bulldogs, winning the coin toss and choosing to defer to the second half. Ogden received the ball and made a march down the field, but was stopped short of the Chargers 20 yard line. AC/GC’s first play was struck with the bad luck of a fumble, and the Bulldogs recovered the ball. The Chargers stood Ogden up though, and took over with the turnover on downs, and started the longest drive of the game, which ended in a nearly 40 yard rushing touchdown from senior quarterback Jathan South.

The Chargers were just getting their scoring machine started though, as they picked up another touchdown on the next drive to go up 13-0 just before the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, South began the second stage of the offensive for the Chargers, with a 38 yard passing touchdown to fellow senior Payton Policky. AC/GC hasn’t been known to be a passing team in the several seasons under Head Coach Cody Matthewson, but they put up as many passing touchdowns in this game as they did all last season, with Joe Crawford and Tommy Skram both hauling one in as well.

The consistent scoring in the second quarter put the Chargers up 33-0, and a final touchdown in the third quarter brought them to their final score of 40-0. The fourth quarter was played by the second string both ways, giving them an opportunity to build some game time experience. The Crafty’s Coffee and Gifts Players of the Game were South on the offensive front, with 120 rushing yards and 124 passing yards, while the defensive and spectacle teams player was Xander Harwood, who lead the team in tackles on the night. At times, it appeared that Harwood was reading the Bulldogs offensive like a book, and was in to make the tackle in the blink of an eye.

The Chargers will have their home opener next week, as they host the Earlham Cardinals, who won their game against the Central Decatur Cardinals 41-12.
