There will not be a 5 second closely guarded rule in Iowa High School basketball starting with the upcoming 2024-25 season. Greene County boys’ head coach Chris Nelson talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about the elimination of that rule. “I think the rule is being eliminated because it’s not called as widely as it could be at times. Kids are moving without the ball, with the ball, and being on the attack more, so this takes some judgement off of the officials. Plus, we have a shot clock so you can’t just stand and hold the ball, so the action has picked up, and I don’t think not having the 5 second closely guarded rule is going to be too big a deal.”
