The Guthrie County Historical Village Foundation is preparing for an informative event.
Historical Museum Curator Kristine Jorgensen says that there will be an evening of education, fundraising, food and fun on August 24th for the Baker No. 2 School that’s located at the Guthrie County Fairgrounds. GCHV Foundation Board Member Rod Stanley will give a presentation titled “History of Guthrie County Country Schools,” then there will be a tour of Cass No. 7 School and a rare view of the country-school items in the GCHV collection.
There will also be old-fashioned root beer floats, hot dogs and other beverages, as well as entertainment by a guitar and fiddle duo, “Vintage Voices” at 6pm. GCHV will accept free will donations throughout the night, with all proceeds going to the Baker No. 2 School. The school has been at the fairgrounds since 1958 as a museum, but is in need of repairs and relocation, as it’s the last historical building left in the floodplain of the fairgrounds. The GCHV is currently working to secure the $14,400 needed to move the schoolhouse over to the west side of the fairgrounds, where it will be restored.
Festivities take place from 5-7pm at the Guthrie County Historical Village in Panora, where the first item will be the tour of the village and the Cass No. 7 Schoolhouse. Stanley will give his presentation at 5:15pm, with the refreshments and entertainment to begin at 6pm.
