The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Monday in regular session.

During reports, Supervisor Vice-Chair Dawn Rodolph mentioned that she attended last week’s carbon pipeline public meeting about landowner’s rights and the problems that a liquid carbon dioxide underground pipeline could have, which is being proposed by Summit Carbon Solutions. She commented on her concern whether an underground pipeline is a good thing to have. Supervisor Dan Benitz was concerned with the possible eight billion gallons of water on an annual basis that would be needed to cool the pressurization of turning carbon emissions from ethanol plants into a liquid and be pipped to an underground storage facility.

County Attorney Thomas Laehn believes that the Iowa Utility Commission has said that Summit is a public utility and that the Supervisors cannot override permits that Summit is applying for within Greene County. However, Laehn said the Board could put stipulations on a permit that Summit would need to abide by.

Next, the Board held a brief discussion and agreed to consider replacing a machine that is used for snow removal at the courthouse on next week’s agenda.

Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams reported that the new jail is about $2 million over budget from what the voters approved last November. He mentioned that the size of the booking area and office spaces, along with other changes are being reduced to get the figure back under budget.

Then, the Board heard an update from Jefferson City Administrator Scott Peterson. He said next week construction to replace the bridge on South Grimmell Road will start, with the bridge to be closed this coming Monday. The East Lincoln Way road project will finish with the concrete portion this week, with the asphalt overlay to happen next week. Finally, Peterson announced that construction on the pickleball courts at Russell Park will begin next week as well.
