US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced this week as National Farmers Market Week and sources say he wants to highlight the role that farmers markets have in their local communities.

Thomas Jefferson Gardens of Greene County Board President Danielle Ross tells Raccoon Valley Radio the importance the Greene County Farmers Market has had throughout the years.

“Well, we’re very fortunate to have a farmers market. It’s a way for people to take pride in what they grow, bring up here and offer better nutrition (and) varieties that you cannot get at a grocery store. You get to experience a lot of other vendors that make crafts, canned goods, (and) baked goods. Another perk to farmers markets is the quality of the veggies and fruit that come.”

Ross notes that this Tuesday’s farmers market is the final opportunity for people to purchase baked goods from the Greene County High School students with Ram Restaurant.

Additionally, Ross says every farmers market usually has musical entertainment and a non-profit organization serves a fundraising meal. This Tuesday Jennifer Powers will perform with her violin and Christ Lutheran Church is serving the meal. Greene County Public Health will also be at the farmers market with a program.

The Greene County Farmers Market is every Tuesday from 4-6:30pm on South Chestnut Street, next to the Thomas Jefferson Gardens.
