With very hot summertime temperatures, Greene County has a few locations where people can go for a break from the heat.

Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio any public building in the county can serve as a cooling center, including any of the libraries. He points out city halls and the Welcome Center in Jefferson can also be areas for a quick rest from the heat.

Williams advises checking on neighbors and individuals who do not leave their homes often when temperatures raise into the 90s and triple digits.

“People that may not have a/c (air conditioning) or the ability to get out to get to a cooling center, just check on them. Stop by and say, ‘Hi,’ I’m sure they (would) enjoy talking to people also, so stay by and say ‘Hi.’”

Williams suggests using a cold washcloth to put around those individuals’ necks to cool them down, or put a bowl or bucket of ice behind or in front of the fan so it blows even cooler air on those individuals you are checking on.
