Portions throughout the state of Iowa have seen flooding and the Dallas County Health Department discusses safety measures to remember.
Community Health Educator Natalie Peters says that although Dallas County hasn’t been affected by flooding, it is important to keep in mind that the Raccoon River and Des Moines River are not too far. She explains when flooding occurs up river, it causes sewage water to bypass treatment facilities before entering waterways. When encountering flood water, Peters recommends staying out of the water as much as possible.
“One current can pull you down under and lead to drowning or other injuries. Contaminants in the water can get on your skin and floating debris can injure you as well, and then flood water in homes can come into contact with electrical outlets, cords, appliances, and then you can become electrocuted if you come into contact with that water.”
Peters stresses to turn off electricity in the homes’ main breaker or fuse box to avoid the water reaching those areas. For additional suggestions, contact the Dallas County Health Department at (515)-993-3750.
