Greene County head softball coach Tom Kennedy has had young teams before, but it’s not been often the veteran head coach started six freshmen in a postseason game. That was the case on July 11 when the Rams lost 10-2 to eighth ranked PCM (Monroe) in the opening round of Class 3A Region 2 play.
Starting as ninth graders for the Rams were pitcher Alaina Heard, catcher Makenna Ebersole, Alivya Smith at third base, Sara Morlan at shortstop, Bellah Johnson at second base, and Kaliyah Minnehan in centerfield. Junior Violet Reedy at first base, sophomores Kaycee Pittman in left field and Addison Gannon in right field rounded out the defense. Eighth grader Breanna Pope batted in a varsity game in the regional contest and that was her first career varsity at-bats.
The Rams were down some players due to injury and other factors. They had no seniors in the lineup at any point this season, so assuming good health, there should be competition for starting spots next season.
