July is Vehicle Theft Prevention Month and law enforcement is making the public aware of some security reminders.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams says to keep unsuspecting individuals from entering your vehicle to always take the keys out of the vehicle and lock it, as well as parking it in a well lit area at night.
“So it’s not as easy for them to walk down the street, check your door handles, and if it’s unlocked, they get inside, and take whatever you might have that’s valuable inside the car.”
Williams notes that keeping these safety precautions in mind especially those that live in the towns in the county.
“Thieves know that there’s more cars parked on the street or in driveways in town, they can hit a couple hundred doors a night to see if there’s one that’s unlocked it, might have somebody’s purse left in it.”
Williams adds to also remove anything that is valuable from parked vehicles to ensure that if a vehicle is broken into, those items will not be stolen. Contact the law enforcement center at 515-386-2136 if someone believes their vehicle has been tampered with.
