With the temperatures climbing back up into the 90s this weekend, dog owners are reminded of the dangers of leaving their pets in their vehicles.

Veterinarian Dr. Christy Fields with Companion Veterinary Clinic in Jefferson says if dogs are left inside a vehicle while the owner is running an errand, there are lots of variables that could happen. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio dogs are generally moving and could accidentally roll down a window or move the vehicle out of park, but one of the worst things that can happen is that the canine gets overheated.

“Just know that that car is definitely going to get way hotter than the normal temperature outside, especially when the sun’s shining. If you have to run in somewhere, park in the shade, leave the air conditioner running, don’t leave them in there for very long unsupervised. Just be real cautious about that.”

Dr. Fields advises that on really hot days to leave dogs at home rather than risk taking them with you in a vehicle.
