As Independence Day approaches, one of the most popular ways to celebrate the holiday is with fireworks.
However, Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse says other than novelty fireworks, such as snakes and sparklers, larger fireworks are prohibited within the city limits. Clouse points out what could happen if an officer responds to a location where fireworks were being shot off.
“If it’s one or two fireworks have been shot off the officer will most likely give you a warning, doesn’t have to, but that’s where we usually like to start. No more please. If another officer or that same officer is coming back to deal with you, you’re going to lose your fireworks and probably, most likely get a citation for it.”
Clouse reminds everyone that it is legal for temporary fireworks tents to be set up in Jefferson and are allowed to sell fireworks.
“That’s the disconnect, a lot of people do not understand that part. ‘Well I can buy them, you know, at the stand out at Fareway or at Ace (Hardware), or wherever the stands are, I can buy them right there.’ Yes you can, but a city ordinance prevents you from firing them off in the city limits of Jefferson.”
Clouse adds if an officer issues someone a citation for illegal use of fireworks, they will also face a large fine amount.
