Temperatures may be cooling for the moment, but summer is still going strong, and heat will continue to be an issue.

For both the cooler and hotter summer temperatures, many people will want to do things outdoors, and will look for activities they can do comfortably. Guthrie County Conservation Director Brad Halterman shares that many opportunities are available to those that wish to take them. He says that for those with a penchant for hiking, the Raccoon River Valley Trail is the perfect place to start, especially with it being free to use, along with many trails that can be found in both county and state parks.

Halterman explains that there are also several fishing spots along the Middle and South Raccoon Rivers, with a multitude of fish to be caught, including some prime areas for smallmouth bass under Lenon Mill Dam. He adds that there are also a few places where individuals can put in a canoe or kayak along the rivers, and take some time to travel down them, though he does stress the importance of safety.
