In less than one week, recycling in Jefferson will make the switch to a new format.

City Administrator Scott Peterson says all residential properties will be doing the single stream system, where all recyclable items can be placed together in the new 65-gallon green carts. Peterson notes that the carts have been delivered and will be picked up by an automated truck once every two weeks on a resident’s normal garbage day. 

This same process is also available for commercial properties and if any business is interested, they can contact City Hall. However, Peterson talks about a slight delay in receiving a new truck that will take the place of the current garbage truck, that will be then shifted over for recycling.

“But we’ll be receiving a loaner truck to be used in the meantime, so we’ll start it July 1st. But if you see this truck, especially you hear word that it might be blue and it’ll look a little different driving around town, but that’s our loaner truck and we’ll get our regular truck likely within a month afterward.”

Peterson explains one popular location will remain open after the transition to single stream recycling is made.

“And a lot of people really like this and appreciate this is the drop off spot that we have in town. And it works especially great for larger cardboard boxes. So anything that can be recycled there are drop off boxes, large drop off boxes out there that you can stop up and drop those in.” 

The drop off location is the corner of Cedar and Perry Streets. Peterson reminds everyone that the same recyclable items can be taken to that drop off location and single stream recycling will begin on July 1st.
