Perry Police Assistant Chief Jim Archer outlines the rules of the road revolving around utility tasks vehicles (UTVs) in the community.

Archer tells Raccoon Valley Radio that UTVs are not allowed on three or four lane roads, including First Avenue from the 2700 Block to Highway 141 in Perry. He adds that the vehicles need to be registered with insurance and follow safety protocols of wearing seatbelts, while having properly working lights. Archer stresses that UTVs are different from All-Terrain vehicles, or ATVs.

“An ATV would be like a four-wheeler, a three-wheeler, anything that has a handlebar so it would be consistent with a motorcycle, those are not allowed on the streets. A UTV actually has a seat that you would sit in like a car, has a steering wheel, so those are allowed but ATVs are not allowed on the city streets.”

Archer reminds residents that golf carts are another vehicle that isn’t permitted on city streets, unless they are street legal. Archer invites residents to call the police department at (515)-465-4636 or stop by the office, 908 Willis Avenue, with any questions.
