A long awaited road project is now underway in Jefferson.

City Administrator Scott Peterson says InRoads is redoing East Lincoln Way from Locust Street to the city cemetery. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio while most people will see the resurfacing portion happening with an asphalt overlay, the second part to the project is happening on the north side of the street.

“They’re widening the street to the north. So there are those existing curbs, or those existing islands (and) the street surface will be widened out to those curbs. So when you’re doing this asphalt overlay, what we will do is put a concrete section underneath that. So for really, really long term stability, it’s concrete under there.”

Peterson reminds motorists that East Lincoln Way will remain open, with one lane, while the project is ongoing.

“There’s a lot of things that happen out there on East Lincoln Way and we do recognize the construction is always kind of a hassle for the motorists. But looking long term on this it’s going to end up being a real nice project and something truly needed. You know the condition of the road really needs to be addressed. We do have those curbs and planting beds out there, it will be a real nice entryway.”

The Jefferson City Council approved InRoads of Des Moines to be the contractor on March 19th for $833,555, which was part of a bond that the Council had previously approved. Peterson adds traffic control will most likely be done with flaggers and the project is anticipated to take about two months to complete.
