Tomorrow Adair County children will have an opportunity to get some new toys.

Jennifer Garside with the Greater Greenfield Community Foundation says that when the tornado hit Greenfield on May 21st, it wasn’t long before The US Marine Corps Toys for Tots reached out, and began working with them to set up an event. She mentions that from 4-7pm tomorrow, any child 14 years old or younger from Adair County can come to The Gathering Place in Greenfield, and get two free age appropriate toys.

Garside tells Raccoon Valley Radio how important acts of kindness like this are for the community.

“Oh, I mean, it’s huge. There have just been so many great companies, you know, that have reached out to us to help provide all kinds of things. You know, free beds for kids, the Toys for Tots program. We had BOGS Boots reach out to us about shipping us boots. Interstate Batteries is bringing down car batteries. I mean, it’s just been pretty overwhelming.”

Garside explains that children must be present to receive their toys. She adds that there have also been several fundraisers that businesses and organizations have held to help raise funds for the recovery process, including the Guthrie County Hospital Foundation, Shotgun Betty’s in Des Moines, and even the Des Moines Comic-Con, and for the US Fleet Week in Los Angeles where the USS Iowa is moored, proceeds from admissions that week were donated to Iowa for tornado damage recovery.
