It’s just past the halfway point of the Greene County softball season and Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams stand at 3-9 overall and 2-6 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference action. Greene County has lost eight of its last nine games, but one area that’s been fairly consistent is hitting.

The Rams have a .306 team batting average through 12 games. Coach Kennedy readily uses slap hitters in his lineups, which are naturally right-handed batters who have switched the left side and typically “slap” at the ball instead of taking a full swing. Teams that slap usually hit a lot of singles and that’s the case with the 2024 Rams as 88 of their 101 hits have been for one base. In 11 games, freshman Sara Morlan has a one double, triple, and one homer, and she’s the team leader in runs batted in with nine. Junior Payton Kokenge has a double and a triple, and junior Violet Reedy and freshman Alaina Heard each have doubled twice. Freshmen Alivya Smith and Bellah Johnson along with junior Daniele Madsen each have one double.

The team averages just under five runs per game, but has allowed close to 10 runs per contest. Errors have been an issue with 49, or four per game.
