A non-profit organization in Greene County has handed the reins to two new individuals to carry on its mission.
Andy and Amy McGinn have been the co-chairs of the Greene County Homeless Coalition since 2021, following the retirement of Pastor Julie Poulsen, who had been the chair at the First United Methodist Church. Amy says her and Andy can no longer be the chairs, due to both of them having full time jobs.
However, Amy points out the need to help individuals either cope with being homeless in the county, or try to prevent someone from being homeless has been on a steady rise. In 2022, Amy says the Homeless Coalition paid 46 nights for individuals to stay at the Super 8 Hotel. Then in 2023, that number grew to 53 and as of June 1, 2024, the Homeless Coalition has already paid for 31 nights. Amy notes they helped in other ways such as paying for car repairs and gas, purchased temperature-rated sleeping bags and funds have also been allocated to prevent some local residents from becoming homeless.
Amy says the new contacts for the Greene County Homeless Coalition, with the Greene County Clergy Association are Pastors J Alexander of Central Christian Church and Dan Cunningham of First Baptist Church in Jefferson. Monetary donations can continue to be made to Greene County Homeless Coalition in care of the Greene County Clergy Association, P.O. Box 145 in Jefferson. They also accept Venmo @GreeneCountyHomeless.
