A reminder that there are two days left for anyone in Iowa to fish without a proper license.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer for Greene County Aaron Arthur says today and tomorrow is known as Free Fishing Weekend where anyone can fish without a valid fishing license. He points out that while there are a few public places in Greene County to fish, there are regulations when it comes to the length of fish that people can keep.

“The main ones that you need to know about around here (in Greene County) are large and smallmouth bass, aka the black bass. They, on a pond or a lake, have to be 15 inches minimum to keep, then on the (Raccoon) river they have to be 12 inches. So if you catch a smallmouth (bass) on the river, to take it home for dinner, you have to make sure it’s at least 12 inches long, or if you are out at Spring Lake (Park) and you catch a largemouth bass you need to make sure to measure and it’s 15 inches.”

Arthur adds the free app, Go Outdoors, shows all of the fishing regulations and it is where folks that are over 16 years old can purchase a fishing license and have it on their phones.
