A free youth fishing event is this Sunday in Greene County.
The Spring Lake Park Fishing Derby will be from 9am-noon on Sunday. There are three age divisions, including 4-8, 9-12 and 13-15 year olds that are allowed to participate. Greene County Conservation Director Tanner Scheuermann says this is a fun and entertaining way to get kids outdoors and to try fishing if they are not used to it.
“We’re kind of losing that demographic. We’re doing everything we can to try and get that back because we want people outdoors, we want people recreating in our areas, and doing those things too.”
Scheuermann notes that participants can bring their own fishing equipment, otherwise there will be fishing poles there for kids to use. He notes that there will be several raffle prizes at the end, where each kid will get one ticket when they register and have a chance to receive another ticket for each fish they catch. He thanks everyone who helps contribute to this free event.
“We always have a great amount of volunteers that help out with that and then donors as well. That event is pretty much all handled by donations from local businesses, local folks in the area that either have a passion for fishing or a passion for what we do.”
No pre-registration is necessary. Check-ins will start around 8am and the fishing derby begins at 9am.
