The Perry baseball team used a familiar formula Wednesday night in knocking off PCM 4-3 in Heart of Iowa action at the PAC. A combination of strong starting pitching with some late timely offense provided the Bluejays with the winning combination for the second time in conference play.
Junior starter Owen Myers was terrific once again on the mound. The right hander worked around a couple of early runs in quieting the PCM offense to only four hits while carefully working around five walks and three hit batters. He finished with six strikeouts.
Myers kept Perry in it until the offense finally broke through in the fifth inning. Geren Kenney lined a two out, two-run single into right field scoring both Wyitt Belgarde and Egan Leber to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Perry scored two more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Owen Myers started the inning getting hit by a Nick Farver pitch and Drake Levan followed with an infield single. One batter later, Juan Diego Beato-Amparo’s groundball scored Myers to tie the game at 3-3. Eighth grader Mason Hayes then delivered the game winning RBI double to right center to give Perry the 4-3 advantage.
Myers entered the seventh inning with 93 of his 110 pitches allowed. He would be forced to leave the mound due to pitch limit with runners on first and third and two outs in the seventh. Kenney entered the game and needed one pitch to entice a groundball out and earn the save as Perry hung on for the thrilling victory.
Hayes and Kenney each finished with two hits as Perry clubbed six hits on the night. Hayes also made a highlight reel catch in the seventh inning to preserve the one run lead.
Perry improves to 4-4 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. The Bluejays will travel to Saydel Friday night for a conference game against the Eagles. First pitch is slated for 7:30.
