May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and motorists are reminded to always use caution when encountering these lower profile vehicles.
Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse says with the warmer temperatures starting in March, motorcycles have been out on the roadways, but he anticipates more later in the summer. With that, Clouse advises other motorists to pay attention when a motorcyclist is close to their vehicle.
“Hardest thing to remember, probably, is you go to change lanes, or pass somebody, or something along those lines, check your blindspots, again, and again, and again. Because a motorcycle, like a bicycle, can hide in that blindspot pretty well.”
Clouse also advises both motorcyclists and the other motoring public that when approaching an intersection, make sure both parties acknowledge that they see each other before proceeding through the intersection.
