It’s getting to be that time of the year where motorcycles are more prominent on the road.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Shelby McCreedy says that while many enjoy riding motorcycles, these vehicles are the most overrepresented when talking about fatal crashes. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio some of the biggest risks for motorcyclists.

“When you talk about the greatest risk when it comes to motorcycles, it’s really oncoming traffic and turning traffic. So the one thing we want operators of motor vehicles to understand is they hold the most danger to motorcyclists. And with warmer weather and with summer, there’s going to be a lot of motorcycles on the road.”

McCreedy mentions that to help keep motorcyclists safe, drivers of other vehicles should make sure to always check their blindspots, share the road, decrease distractions and increase following distance when behind a motorcycle. She adds that a few other ways to help keep everyone safe are to make sure you’re looking all directions when making a turn or passing someone, and expect the unexpected.
