A multi-year project has entered the final stretch at a popular tourist attraction in Greene County.

Greene County Conservation Director Tanner Scheuermann says the conservation board received a $35,000 grant from the Greene County Community Foundation to help with completing the replacement of the final pit latrine at Spring Lake Park. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio the conservation department has been slowly replacing all of the pit toilets at the county parks over the past decade and this grant will help finish off the last one at Spring Lake Park.

Scheuermann talks about how this $61,291 total project cost is being matched with the $35,000 community foundation grant.

“We got a donation from the late Jerry Kelly about a year and a half ago. So we’re going to use that money to match for funds for this (grant). No money out of the county’s pocket as far as for this project. It’s all on donation and grant funding.”

Scheuermann thanks the community foundation for their assistance with this ongoing project. He adds for campers at the east side shelter to not expect to use the new facility this camping season, as the item takes a while to manufacture, but he anticipates installing it late this fall and have it ready for the 2025 camping season.
