With the 90th Iowa General Assembly now over, lawmakers are taking time to reflect on the legislative session.

District 24 Senator Jesse Green highlights one bill that was passed within the last week of the session. Lawmakers passed a 3.8 percent flat income tax rate for next fiscal year, which Green points out will save an average family household $800 on state income taxes.

Green was happy with the changes that were made to the Area Education Agencies (AEA) and giving school districts flexibility going into next school year to look at other entities for media and professional development services, other than the AEA. He adds that teacher pay increases were another positive from this session, which could lead Iowa to having the sixth best teacher salaries in the country.

As Green finishes his fourth year in the legislature, he talks about the most impressive part for him.

“Overall, I am so amazed by our system of government. There’s just so many checks and balances and so many ways for a bill to die. Our system of government was designed to move that way, to make sure that bad ideas are not put into law. Again, I just walk away just absolutely amazed at how great our state is, how great our system is, it’s just been an amazing experience, and this session in particular I’ve grown a lot as a legislator and I really appreciate it.”

The 2024 Legislative session ended last week.
