While education was the main topic of the 2024 Iowa Legislative session, there were some bigger items that weren’t talked about as much.
Representative for District 23 Ray Sorensen says that there was a constitutional amendment that was passed that some may not have seen much on. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that it would change things so that to increase taxes, both legislative chambers would have to have the vast majority of their members sign on.
“If it’s passed by the people, it has to pass two general assemblies and then a vote of the people. It requires a supermajority in both the House and Senate to raise taxes, and I feel like that protects our taxpayers.”
Sorensen mentions that another constitutional amendment was passed as well that would set a flat tax, which passed both chambers. He adds that for him and many others, these constitutional amendments are about protecting the taxpayers, and making sure that the legislative chambers are good stewards of taxpayer money.
