Some improvements have been made to the field conditions at Linduska Field in Jefferson, but now part of the infrastructure will get an upgrade soon.

The Greene County School Board recently approved new lighting at the facility that is used for football, track and field, and soccer. Superintendent Brett Abbotts says this improvement is mainly due to safety, with wooden poles from the 1970s and antiquated lights that constantly burn out.

“I get a little nervous, even just now we have about a 15-20 mile an hour wind, and you can see the sway in those poles a little more than I would like. So that becomes a big safety issue. My one concern is that those poles would snap (and) if that ever happened, and they fell and there was no students around it would be a blessing, and if there was students or anybody around it would be a disaster. So I think it’s the right step in the right direction of safety, but then also for upkeep and maintenance of our field.”

Additionally, the School Board added show lights that can be coordinated with music to flash at different times and change colors. Musco Sports Lighting was approved as the contractor for the installation of the lights with an amount not to exceed $280,000, which includes the removal of the current light poles and replacing them with metal ones and LED lights. Countywide Electric was also approved to handle the electrical connections for $13,280. Both prices will be paid through the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy funds.

Abbotts adds there’s no timeline of when the project will happen, but ideally it should be done by football season.
