Iowa Senator Sarah Trone-Garriott shares her stance on the summer feeding grant program from Governor Kim Reynolds.

Trone-Garriott tells Raccoon Valley Radio that back in December, Governor Reynolds declared that the state would not participate in the summer feeding assistance program from the federal government, providing $29,000,000 ($29 million) to approximately 240,000 kids during the summer. She points out that Reynolds has an alternative plan to give $900,000 to kids through a competitive grant program. Trone-Garriott elaborates that the money will be spread out over a few years.

“It’s not $900,000 in one year, it’s $900,000 over three years, so it’s even less than you first thought and there are so many counties, school districts, entire legislative districts that don’t even have a summer feeding site, they might not have anybody who’s able to apply for this money, put together a program and provide these summer meals, so there’s still places that are not going to be served in our state.”

Trone-Garriott believes that the state could do better for the kids in Iowa.
