The Greene County FFA Chapter is headed to Ames Monday through Wednesday for this year’s state convention.
As part of the convention are several competitions that some of the Greene County students will be doing. One of them is a public speaking entry with sophomore Leah McCormick. Her topic is about animal confinement operations in California and why she decided to pursue that issue for a speech.
“My Ag teacher, Miss Harris, was talking to me about Proposition 12, which was recently passed in California. Which actually affects Iowa a lot and I was surprised that I’d never heard of the topic, I never heard of Prop 12, and nobody around had been talking about it. So it’s something I really wanted to get the word out and felt pretty passionate about talking about.”
FFA Advisor Raelyn Harris tells Raccoon Valley Radio about three other competitions that students are doing and are only conducted at the state convention, including Ag Communications, Ag Biotechnology and Poultry Evaluation.
Harris states 19 students will be at the three-day event, where they will also participate in the College and Career Fair, along with attending other sessions and taking part in the FFA Fun Night. She adds that two other adults are also going to Ames, including Assistant FFA Advisor Misty Betty and Emily Van Egmond as another chaperone.
