The jazz choir ensemble from Greene County High School recently competed at the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships and placed the highest in the program’s history.
Ram Jive was one of eight jazz choirs in Class 3A across the state that were selected to perform in the contest and they finished third, behind Solon, who was first place, and Mount Vernon that was second. Vocal Director David Heupel describes how close they were to first place, as each ensemble was judged based on a 300 point system.
“The top three were separated by, looks like 3.5 points between first, second and third. So it was very close at the top. One judge even ranked us first. So that was pretty cool.”
Heupel explains the key component to Ram Jive’s success this year has been by everyone listening to each other.
“One of the things I like to say to my choirs is the most important part in your body for singing is your ears. To get that nice sound and that good blend, and really locking things in, you really have to be able to listen well, and they do that.
Additionally, Trysten Naylor was one of four outstanding performer awards for playing the piano as part of Ram Jive’s rhythm section. The Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships were held at Waukee High School this past Tuesday and Wednesday with Class 1A through 4A.
