With the final weeks of the 90th Iowa General Assembly upon us, lawmakers are starting to put more focus on the state’s budget.
District 24 Senator Jesse Green (R-Boone) says as the 2025 fiscal year budget begins this July 1st, lawmakers are required to use the lower figures of revenue predictions between this past December and March from the Revenue Estimating Conference. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that they will use the March figures, which were estimated to have an increase of $60 million of additional revenue. Green points out the $60 million of increased revenue would go into the taxpayer relief fund of the budget.
“Our economy is doing well. We’re at three percent unemployment, (and) 67 percent labor participation rate. That just goes to show that our economy is growing and our revenues are holding strong despite our tax cuts.”
Green adds the current fiscal year shows a drop in revenues, which was anticipated due to the tax cuts the state legislature made last year, along with some of the federal tax changes.
