The application TikTok has risen in popularity over the last couple of years and one Iowa Representative discusses the challenges it poses in the House.
Iowa House Representative David Young previously told Raccoon Valley Radio that House File 2523 relating to parental control over social media received overwhelming support from the House, passing the bill. He thinks that parents/guardians should be in charge of their children’s social media usage to avoid exposure to inappropriate images or open the door to bullying. However, Young reports that TikTok is a bigger challenge. The company is based out of China and Young iterates it’s a method to breach data privacy in the United States.
“We see that as kind of a tool of psychological and economical warfare by the Chinese and I think we need to address that and so while we make some gains in the House to talk about that and to vote on restrictions of TikTok.”
Young emphasizes that the Senate didn’t do anything this year and believes that it’s a broader issue on the federal level.
