With many bills passing through the Senate during the second funnel week, Iowa Senator Sarah Trone-Garriott highlights one in particular that she is frustrated didn’t survive.

Trone-Garriott tells Raccoon Valley Radio that there was a bill being worked on pertaining to on the job cancer risk for firefighters. She explains that cancer is the biggest threat to firefighters’ health due to being exposed to a variety of toxic chemicals. Trone-Garriott discusses what the benefits of the bill would’ve been.

“This bill would’ve helped make sure that more cancers are presumed to be caused by their work, and then be covered in a more holistic way, so that people can get the benefits and support they need when they’re battling cancer.”

Trone-Garriott says the bill was halted by Iowa Government Chair Jason Schultz after passing the House unanimously. While acknowledging the setback, Trone-Garriott demonstrates the bill can still be passed in other ways and they’re going to keep trying to push it forward.
