St. Patrick’s Day may have passed, but celebrations may still continue.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Shelby McCreedy says that the safety initiative for the holiday continues through Thursday, and tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the safety practices they were asking individuals to follow still remain.

“Again, we’re telling people it’s no different than what we preach on the New Year’s holiday, 4th of July holiday, any of those holidays where alcohol consumption is a part of the celebrations. Execute your plan, make a plan. Get a designated driver. Stay at the location which you’re celebrating at. Just do whatever you can to not get behind the wheel.”

McCreedy explains that last March there were 26 roadway fatalities, with 40 percent coming in the week of St. Patrick’s Day. She emphasizes that the initiative this year is “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving,” and that even one or two drinks can affect a person’s driving, and adds that if you feel different, you drive different.
