The Greene County School Board will have a special meeting coming up later this month.
Due to a new state law, all school boards are required to have an additional public meeting about the proposed property tax rate for the next school year. Greene County School District Superintendent Brett Abbotts explains which direction the property tax levy will head into the 2025 fiscal year.
“It is going to show that we’re going to have an increase in the actual dollar amount, but the rate amount is going to be significantly less. So we’re showing almost 16 percent decrease in the amount of property taxes that the school is going to be asking from our taxpayers.”
Abbotts notes the assessed property values across Greene County went up 30 percent this year, which means there is a larger tax base to draw property taxes from, and that leads to a lower tax rate for next year. He adds there could be $0.15-$0.25 decrease per $1,000 of property valuation. The first hearing will take place on March 27th at 5:15pm at the District Boardroom at the middle school. The next budget hearing will be at the regular scheduled board meeting on April 10th.
