The second funnel week just concluded last week and there’s a bill relating to arming teachers with guns that’s made it through.
Iowa Senator Sarah Trone-Garriott tells Raccoon Valley Radio that this bill is not one that she is fond of. In the event of a school shooting, the bill would ask a school member to disarm the shooter. Trone-Garriott has said she has spoken with law enforcement about the amount of training involved in carrying and using a firearm. She believes the bill will put people’s lives in jeopardy.
“So I’m really concerned that we’re setting people up for a dangerous situation and the bill kind of makes that assumption that’s that is exactly what’s happening because it says in the bill that because people are likely to be hurt or killed because of this new policy that they’re going to provide immunity to those arm staffed persons for civil and criminal acts.”
Garriott fears that the bill isn’t all the way thought out and with kids on campus, she thinks it would be wise to have trained professionals out there to do the job properly. Garriott encourages people to keep reaching out to legislators to voice their concerns.
