The national American Legion organization is celebrating its 105th anniversary this year, and one local post is inviting new people to join.
American Legion Post #11 in Jefferson believes in the primary focuses of the national organization, which is mentoring and sponsoring the youth with programs in the communities, promoting a strong national security, and continuing a devotion to military service members and veterans.
The youth programs that American Legion does include the Fifth Grade Flag Essay and the High School Oratorical Contest, among others. They also advocate for a well-funded Department of Defense to ensure a strong military and have a focus on surveillance of rogue nations and terrorist groups. The organization helps service members and veterans to get access to benefits and health services.
American Legion Post #11 Post Adjutant Barb Labate says the benefits of belonging to their organization allows a member to have direct influence on the youth and their futures, maintain a legislative presence for veteran benefits, and that they support fellow and future veterans.
