Last week, the Iowa Senate was scheduled to have a floor debate on the bill that has garnered the most amount of attention this legislative session, but it was pulled.
Iowa District 24 Senator Jesse Green (R-Boone) says the reason for why the Area Education Agency (AEA) bill was taken off of the floor debate schedule was due to additional concerns that were brought up by other lawmakers that needed to be addressed first. He points out that he felt comfortable enough to pass the governor’s AEA bill through the Senate Education Committee.
“I think it’s a good enough bill to where we can put it in leadership’s hands and allow them to negotiate the final details. I mean the House’s bill is quite a bit different. And so we just know it’s not going to go to the governor’s desk the way it is.”
Green adds he continues to push for a “fee for service” to be included in the final version of the bill, where school districts are allowed to decide what services they want from AEAs.
