With the spring sports season starting, one AC/GC Chargers coach reflects on the seniors he coached.
Head boys wrestling coach Lane Rumelhart says that seniors Tegan Slaybaugh and Payton Jacobe were impressive leaders for the program, with Jacobe showing an impressive amount of talent and growth in only two and a half years, and Slaybaugh putting skills he’s worked on since he was able to get on the mat. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that he sees this impressiveness in other areas that the two touch.
“I think in 1A schools this is especially prevalent, but it’s hard to be great at just one thing. Those guys are great everywhere. You got to be great everywhere if you want to be great at wrestling. We preach that all the time. Those two guys showcase that better than anyone. I’m looking for the underclassmen to all step up and take after that great leadership set by both those guys. Great examples. Those guys are great in the classroom, great in all their other sports and other things they do. I know Payton just qualified for something, I think in California, a deca-competition. I know it’s not anything athletic related. I mean, those guys are just doing awesome things all the time.”
Rumelhart explains he’s extremely proud of both seniors, and knows that both will be extremely successful no matter what they choose to do next.
