Competing for the second time in four days, a partial Greene County High School girls’ track & field squad took part in Friday’s Iowa Association of Track Coaches Indoor State Meet. The event was held inside the Lied Student Recreation Center on the Iowa State University Campus. Greene County was in the Class 2A field on Friday morning into the early afternoon with 1A schools. The 3A-4A portion of the meet was held from mid-afternoon well into the evening hours. Separate team scoring was kept for all four classes.
Coach Derek Merk’s Rams entered just seven of the 15 events. Greene County’s highest placing came from junior Payton Kokenge, who tied for eighth place in a field of 27 high jumpers. She cleared 4′ 11″, then missed all three attempts at 5′ 1″. Junior Danielle Madsen was in competition for the first time following knee surgery last summer. She placed ninth among 32 shot putters after getting the final spot from the preliminary round. Madsen’s first throw was her best at 33′ 2-3/4″. The final top 10 finish for the Rams came in the last event of the day, the 4 x 400 meter relay. Greene County was ninth among 21 quartets with Savanah Lansman, Addison Gannon, Kokenge, and Kaycee Pittman. They covered the 1,600 meters in 4:31.54.
This week is Spring Break at Greene County High, but the girls and boys both have their final indoor meet of the season on Saturday, March 16 at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.
