Iowa Senator Sarah Trone-Garriott raises concern for the role women will play on boards and commissions in the Iowa House Legislature.

A decision was made by the House to pass a Senate bill that eliminates gender balancing on boards and commissions. She notes a previous bill was being pushed to fight for equality in having better representation within those areas. Garriott expresses her fear for women after the bill’s passage.

“Taking that away, I’m afraid we’re going to see less women being apart of these boards and commissions and so we’re not there yet, and sometimes the same people get asked over and over again to do things, and other folks get overlooked and we just need that push to make sure that we’re bringing in a lot of different kinds of voices and it’s really important to have different perspectives on matters that impact different people in different ways.”

Trone-Garriott says that for a long time women were left out of the conversation, but emphasizes that they make up half the population. She believes that the House is still a way off of fixing the problem of gender balance.
