Dallas Center – Grimes girls basketball was able to make the state tournament once again this past Tuesday, and are now gearing up for the state tournament next week as a four seed. Their first round opponent is one they’re familiar with in the North Polk Comets, with the two putting together a nice rivalry the last few years.

The two teams met earlier this year with DCG getting a 55-44 win back in November. Josie Lampe had 15 points and 6 rebounds while Kayla Reis had 12 points and 7 rebounds. DCG outrebounded the Comets 31-19.

DCG leads the series 2009 with a 10-2 record and have been able to win the last three games in the series. They will be playing each other in a rematch of the 4A state championship game from a year ago, where DCG won in overtime 57-50. DCG held the Comets to 38% shooting from the floor. Seven players combined from the two teams have graduated, but most will come with a lot of firepower coming into this game.

The Comets lost three of their top four scorers from that team but junior Abby Tuttle has been great this season averaging 15.5 points per game, first in assists at 4.3 and second in rebounds at 4.2. Becca Aagard is someone to keep an eye on in the post at 7.7 points per game and leading rebounder at 6.7.

Two of the best defensive teams in the state will meet, with North Polk only giving up 34.9 points per game and DCG at 39.3 points per game.

DCG and North Polk will be playing in the 4A quarterfinals next Tuesday from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The game will have a 1:30 tip. You can listen to the game on the 943, 997, and AM 1310 KDLS with pregame coverage to begin 20 minutes before tip.
