A Jefferson man is accused of kidnapping his biological son, which also triggered a statewide Amber Alert on Tuesday.

According to court documents, the Jefferson Police Department was notified at 12:44pm that 34-year-old Brandon Duong took his child, seven-year-old Bryson Duong, from Greene County Elementary School improperly during recess. Brandon was restricted from having custody of Bryson from following a court order from this past December.

Police Chief Mark Clouse said the Greene County School District placed the elementary and middle schools in a “Secure the Perimeter” after Bryson was taken. The school district sent out communication that “all other students were brought inside from recess and resumed normal activities in the school for the remainder of the day.” Court documents show that Jefferson Police made contact with the middle school and it was confirmed that Brandon’s other child was not taken and was still at the middle school.

An Amber Alert was then issued at 3:28pm. Then just before 5pm, law enforcement found Brandon’s vehicle northeast of Remsen in Plymouth County. Brandon led law enforcement on a high-speed chase before eventually crashing his vehicle. DCI officials say Brandon left the vehicle on foot, in possession of a rifle, and carrying his son. Several law enforcement entities arrived in the area, negotiated with Brandon and he was eventually taken into custody. Bryson is now in the care of the Iowa Department of Human Services.

Brandon is charged with a Class B Felony for second degree kidnapping-armed with a dangerous weapon and a Class D Felony for violation of custodial order-relative. Duong was transported and booked into the Greene County Jail. The Jefferson Police Department and DCI are continuing their investigation at this time and Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
