The Greenfield Public Library will be hosting a fun gardening and horticulture event next weekend.
A winter sowing make and take will be held from 10:30-11:45am at the library on February 10th. Winter sowing is a seed starting technique used to start seedlings for vegetables, perennials, annuals and herbs that allows the plants to start growing outside in the winter. This allows stratification, or the placing of seeds close together in moist sand or peat, which helps them germinate and start growing.
This is typically done by using recyclable materials like milk jugs or other plastic containers to create an enclosed space for the seeds to begin growing, as the plastics work like a greenhouse to help keep the environment warm and moist. Space is limited, and registration is required, but all supplies will be provided.
